ANNA WALES

ABOUT

STATEMENT OF WORK

My work is designed to create a powerful visual impact along with an enticing tactility.  It features a combination of felt and silver, or of oxidized silver with polished precious metals which are arranged to form stark contrasts or subtle transformations throughout a singular piece.

Much of my inspiration is drawn from the act of making itself. As I watch one piece emerge, new ideas begin to bloom, often through looking at individual elements or by playing with the materials. Whilst a lot of my work references natural and organic forms I am not aware of being directly influenced by these objects. More the peices themselves develop and grow as plants do.

I constantly try to return to my original themes and set out to ensure each piece is aesthetically distinct, pleasingly tactile, and enjoyable to wear.

BIOGRAPHY

Having initially studied textiles during my art foundation I found it natural to continue using these materials when I went on to study Jewellery at Middlesex University.  I was particularly attracted to this course due to the diverse nature of the work that it produced and whilst I was there we were encouraged to explore and experiment along with learning about materials more traditionally associated with jewellery

After University I went on to do a years residency at the wonderful Bishopsland workshops.  My time there really bought a focus to my work and was hugely important in learning how to survive in the world of self employment. It was whilst at Bishopsland that I began to develop pieces purely in precious metals.
