DEBORAH FORREST

ABOUT:

Deborah is a contemporary designer and jewellery artist based in the UK.

The use of enamel is a key feature within Deborah’s work, and she is one of a small but increasing number of contemporary artists who take a non-traditional approach to its use. Deborah points to the intriguing alchemic nature of enamel, and its expressive peculiarities, behind her choice of this medium.

Deborah’s jewellery has a distinctive aesthetic inspired by her fascination in the perceived ‘hidden history’ of objects and places; often only evidenced by small remnants or marks left behind. As a means of expressing her ideas, she focuses on these small details, responding to them through observational mark making and surface manipulation techniques in enamel.

By contrast, she uses abstract references from her love of the highly decorative ornamentation of the 18th Century in her metal work; to frame and make precious her observations in enamel.

Her choice of materials such as kiln fired enamels, and the use of traditional Silversmithing techniques reflects her desire to have a personal interaction with her materials during the making process, and create unique pieces that can be described as handmade by the artist.
